Reviews:
A Musical version of the legend of King Arthur was the perfect opener for Pontefract Liquorice Festival.
This professional show, performed on an outdoor stage in the valley gardens, was a fantastic idea that clearly went down well with audience members of all ages.
The show gave the famous story of Guinevere's Marriage to King Arthur and subsequent betrayal with her knight Lancelot the rock opera treatment, with costumes inspired by a punky, modern gothic style.
It worked remarkably well, not least because the cast's talents were huge. All the leads' voices were fabulous, especially Diana Chrisman who gave a very moving performance as Guinevere, and the extremely watchable Nick Millward, as Lancelot. These were well supported by a charismatic chorus of four couples.
Anita Adams was fearsome as the vengeful Morgana, and Barry Ryan English was striking in his two roles as the Priest and Elaine’s father.
The production was packed with action with several especially exciting and well choreographed fight scenes, but slower moments were equally gripping.
This show's combination of old English folklore and Modern Trends was just right for Pontefract on the eve of its increasingly successful Liquorice Festival.
Congratulations to the show's producer, and whoever had the idea to stage it.
